The Chairman of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland, Willie O Reilly, has expressed concern about the appointment of a former Director General of RTE as Chairman of the new Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).
“I know Bob Collins for many years and respect him as a very able manager and as a person of integrity. However, to appoint an individual who has spent his working life in RTE to this crucially important and very sensitive position has caused concern and frustration among independent broadcasters in Ireland.
“The BAI will regulate both commercial and public service broadcasting at a challenging time for the industry. Whether real or not, there is a perception that Mr. Collin’s loyalties will naturally be to RTE. This may be entirely unfair but even the perception that it might be the case is unhelpful.
“We will be seeking an immediate meeting with Bob Collins so that we can share our concerns”, said Mr. O’Reilly
