IBI Chairman, John Purcell said “Independent radio stations have a strong connection to the local communities that they broadcast to. These stations reflect the culture and pride of the listeners and this includes a commitment to Irish language programming. The introduction of a Commercial Radio Irish Language Award as part of An tOireachtas Media Awards is recognition of the dedication of broadcasters and radio stations to the Irish language.
“I would like to congratulate Highland Radio, Newstalk and Spin 1038 on being shortlisted and look forward to seeing the winners, not only from independent radio but from all other Irish language media, at the Gala Event at this year’s Oireachtas Festival”.
The Media Awards, which are presented annually, are recognised as a mark of excellence in Irish language broadcasting. In addition to the new Commercial Radio category there is also a Community Radio category added this year. The two new categories are sponsored by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI).
